With the re-development of a Geelong branch library came the opportunity to install RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). This microchip technology revolutionises circulation desk operations, provides item security while allowing self check-out. The challenge comes as staff have to attach tags in all current items; this is completed by scanning the current barcode then programming and inserting the tag, a very time and labour intensive activity. Once the tagging is completed RFID becomes a wonderful collection management tool.

With the RFID system, each item in the library's collection is affixed with an RFID tag that contains a tiny antenna and a memory chip that stores information about the item's identity and allows accurate identification and tracking. A cordless, handheld scanner reads the tags, enabling library staff to easily locate, inventory, check in and check out materials. Unlike barcode systems, radio frequency identification does not require line of sight between the tag and the scanner, resulting in easier, more efficient tracking.

RFID freeing librarians to spend more time doing what they do best – helping people.

As a person who loves colour I enjoyed playing around with the Experimental Colr Pickr by Jim Bumgardner. It is a source of delight, as with everything Flickr the range of images is mind blowing, add colour choice and the results are even better.

The Librarian Trading Cards prove that we come in all shapes and sizes,making up a very interesting deck of cards.Perhaps at a later time I would consider joining the deck of librarians.
